A detailed description of the knife:
The Hercules is named after the Roman mythological hero born with great strength. This piece of craftmanship took many hours to create. My goal was to design a folder that would exhibit great strength combined with beauty. I am very pleased with the final result.
The thickness of the blade is 3/16” ( 4.8mm ). The result is a blade with very little lateral flex if the knife should be forced sideways. The 3/16” blade is 3.4 times stiffer than a standard 1/8” ( 3mm ) blade. The satin finish is desired of a hard working piece. The tip is strong because the angle between the spine and the blade edge is a steep 84 degrees. The blade is razor sharpened at an angle of 20 degrees and the spine is completely file worked to the tip.The thumb screw is threaded through the blade and the head is file worked. A cherry red handmade washer under the the head of the thumb screw provides a nice accent to the blade. The blade is finished with the “SpearTip Knives” logo and the Canadian flag.
The spacer is made up of three pieces. Two pieces are 1/8” ( 3mm ) 154CM high chromium martensitic stainless steel hardened to Rockwell C57. Both pieces are file worked and possess a flat 1/2” ( 1.2cm ) section at the rear of the handle should the knife be needed for mild hammering. The two pieces are separated by a distinct cherry red liner. The spacer is situated above the handle creating a unique look showing off the file work from the side. The raised spacer provides a comfortable yet very secure grip under adverse conditions.
The knife has maintenance free bolsters of 304 high chromium, high nickel austenitic stainless steel. The bolsters are mounted with three black oxide screws on each side which increases the strength of the bolster area should the knife be subjected to lateral force.
I chose the black canvas micarta for the handle because it is very durable and resilient to all weather conditions. The handle is fastened with six stainless steel screws.
The locking mechanism is a “liner lock” . It is termed from one liner used as a spring to butt up against the tang of the blade when the knife is opened. The lock combined with a large 3/16” ( 4.8mm ) stainless steel stop pin provide a strong secure open position while the knife is used. Both liners are made of 1/16” ( 1.5mm ) ATS34 high chromium stainless steel. One liner is hardened and tempered to a Rockwell C57 and the other which is used as the lock spring is tempered to a Rockwell C43.
Sheath: The sheath for this knife is extra special. It is hand laced with red thread and, as with all the sheaths, the top of the snap is hidden within the leather. The leather of the snap area is cut to a spear shape and laced to appear as a spear tip. The sheath also shows off the logo that is electro-chemically etched on to a plate made from 1/16” ( 1.5mm ) ATS34 high chromium stainless steel. The four bolts used to fasten the plate penetrate through the leather in to four custom nuts designed and finished not to blemish the knife.
The result is a strong, handsome knife for outdoor use that is a piece of art.
